Lee C. Bollinger
Dear Mr. Bollinger.
Next September 23th at the World Leader Forum, Mr. Rafael Correa, President of Ecuador, will be lecturing about Media and Democracy.
You should know, Mr. Bollinger, that Rafael Correa has captured all the political functions in Ecuador making his government a dictatorship which has prosecuted civilians, journalists, democrats, etc, just for the sin of expressing their free opinions.
You should also know that Mr. Correa has indicted El Universo, a 90 years old newspaper with a wide national coverage, just for expressing the Editor´s opinion about the well known 30S´s affair which derived in the murder of six Ecuadorians as a result of Mr. Correas’s irrational and provocative attitude in front of police officer’s mob (Sept 30Th 2010), in a nearby hospital.
Being the Judicial Courts under Mr. Correa´s ruling, judges have condemned El Universo’s owners to pay US 40 Million Dollars as a moral compensation to Rafael Correa and in addition they will have to go to jail for three years in an unprecedented decision. This situation undermines freedom of opinion in accordance to international Conventions, such as the OAS Interamerican Letter of Understanding in regards to Human Rights and Freedom of Speech. In this way, Mr. Correa is threatening the remaining Ecuadorian free press to keep them silent and submissive
We see no coherence in Mr. Correa´s lecture at your University at the light of recent events in Ecuador which have been denounced by international organizations, such as the Interamerican Press Association, Human Rights Watch, and No Frontier Journalists and alike.
Being Columbia University one of the leading educational organizations and defender of Free Press and Democracy we can’t see any reason for Mr. Correa’s lecturing about what he is precisely undermining in our country. Please reconsider your invitation for such kind of fake lecturer.
